The S&P 500 hit an intraday record to close out Monday’s open, gaining 1% as U.S. stocks pushed forward after the holiday weekend, keeping pace on a strong start to the typically-bullish end-of-year-run known to investors as the Santa Claus Rally.
All three major indexes were up heading into a quiet final week of 2021 amid lower trading volumes and light economic and corporate calendars. The S&P and Nasdaq each ticked up more than 1% during midday hours, while the Dow jumped 230 points.
“I’m actually very bullish on the market,” Defiance Investments co-founder & CIO Sylvia Jablonski told Yahoo Finance Live. “There’s low liquidity in the markets this week, but we’re finishing out pretty strong. I would expect next year to be even better.”
