Tophats – Review #2

This program moved to CLOSED! Do not invest there!

The Tophats Investment Plans.

A week or so ago, in our News Commentary #643, we described a number of changes that Tophats made in the investment plans that they offer.  These changes actually make Tophats a completely different investment program!  So, what I’d like to do in this article is to bring you up to date by making a quick second review of the Tophats investment plans as they now stand.  As an introduction, let’s begin by repeating what we said about the new plans in the News Commentary.

Tophats (reviewed here) just announced some major changes in the selection of investment plans that they offer.  As you may recall, they initially offered two plans as follows:

2.5% per day for 60 days
3.0% per day for 50 days

An interesting thing about these plans was that the total gross interest that they paid was 150% in both cases — a 50% net profit.

The announcement indicates that they are discontinuing the 2.5% plan, but are adding two additional higher interest shorter term plans in its place.  The new investment plans are as follows:

5% per day for 50 days
7% per day for 22 days

Again, the total gross interest for both these plans is 150% (154% for the 7% plan) — a 50% net profit (54% for the 7% plan).

These changes in the Tophats investment program deserve more attention and, for this reason, we tentatively plan to do a second review of the program in the near future.  So, you might want to regard this blog article as a sort of “First Thoughts” article about what is essentially a new program.

As a result of these changes, the Tophats investment plan offerings now look like this:

3% daily for 50 days
$10 – $49

5% daily for 30 days
$50 – $199

7% daily for 22 days
$200 – $10,000

Analysis of the Tophats Investment Plans.

The new set of investment plans that Tophats now offers are a completely different ball game.  Rather than being relatively low interest and relatively long term, they are now higher interest and relatively short term.  Neither the old or the new group of investment plans are radical.  By that I mean terms as long as a year or as short as a day of two.  Or, extremely low or extremely high interest rates.  However, they are quite different from one another.  Let’s take a closer look and see how the numbers work out…

First, let’s take a look at how long it takes each of the plans to break even.  That’s simple to determine.  You just divide 100% by the gross daily interest that an investment plan pays.  For example, for the 3% plan, you divide 100% by 3% to get that the plan breaks even in around 34 days.  Doing the same arithmetic for the other two plans, you get the following results:

Plan                 Days to Break Even
3%                   34 days
5%                   20 days
7%                   15 days

Next, let’s determine the average daily net interest (DNI) that you can earn from each of the investment plans.  To get DNI, we first need to determine the total gross interest that the plan pays.  As an example, for the 3% plan, you multiple 3% by 50 days to get a total gross return of 150%.  Actually, the website tells you this.  In fact, for ALL the Tophats investment plans, the total gross interest is the same — 150% (it’s 154% for the 7% plan).  Since this return includes your investment, your total net return will be an even 50%.  Finally, if you divide this by the 50-day length of the plan, you get an average daily net interest or DNI of exactly 1%.  Again, repeating this arithmetic for the 5% and 7% plans, you get the following results:

Plan                 DNI
3%                   1.00%
5%                   1.67%
7%                   2.45%

Discussion.

First of all, the dollar amount of investment that is required to participate in ALL the investment plans is quite reasonable.  Even the highest interest plan, the 7% plan, only requires a minimum investment of $200.  So, it will be accessible to any serious investor.

If you look at the numerical results of the previous section and compare them to what we discovered in the original review of the Tophats investment program, you can see that it is now a completely different program.  With the higher interests that are paid, the investment plans break even faster and are much more lucrative.  The question might be: “Are they so lucrative that the program is now doomed to close in short order?”  Let’s take a closer look.

As I already mentioned, we now have three very affordable investment plans.  There is no high minimum investment that will lock the serious investor out of any of them.  To be sure, a number of investors won’t be able to afford the $200 of the 7% plan.  However, I believe that anyone who is serious about the Tophats program will be able to invest.  Another good feature of the new plans is that, for all practical purposes, they all break even within a month of so.

DNI is our measure of profitability (and risk) of an investment plan.  If you multiply the DNIs of each of these plans by seven, you get their expected average weekly profit.  Here are the numbers for that:

Plan                 Average Weekly Profit
3%                   7%
5%                   11.7%
7%                    17.2%

Depending on your temperament as an investor, these levels of profit can be either high or low.  In HYIP Insights #23, we suggested that a sensible level of weekly profit to aim for might be between 5% and 10%.  Our recommendation might be overly conservative, but it does point out that the 7% investment plan is certainly a lucrative one!  Similarly, in HYIP Insights #12, we suggested that programs offering investment plans with DNIs higher than 2% might have trouble surviving in the long term.  This is always the dilemma with HYIPs.  A good program administrator will try to provide investors with the most lucrative returns possible while, at the same time, insure that the company will not close prematurely.  We can only hope that the folks running the show at Tophats have done their math such that the program will be able to pay these very attractive returns on a long-term basis.

Conclusions.

The Tophats investment plan offerings have been changed such that they now offer three medium term plans.  All return your investment as part of your earnings.  The plans all break even within a month or so and are very affordable, with the highest minimum investment being only $200.  The highest interest plan is especially lucrative, which might put the long-term survivability of the overall program at risk.  However, the interest that is promised in not off-the-chart and, with wise management practices, the Tophats investment program might very well be successful in the long term.  Tophats will probably now appeal to the more adventuresome investor.
