The Appco Investment Plans.
We recently published a “First Thoughts” article about Appco. In it we summarized their investment plans in the following way:
For the investor, Appco offers two very different investment plans. One pays 4.375% interest per hour for 24 hours (one day), for a total gross return of 105%. The other pays 0.125% interest per hour (3% per day) — forever. You can opt out of the “forever” plan by forfeiting 10% of your deposit. So, one investment plan is extremely short while the other is “infinitely” long. An interesting combination…
Here’s the complete information about these two investment plans:
- 24 Hour Plan
- 105% per day (4.375 per hour)
- $10 – $50,000
- Forever Plan
- 3% per day (0.125% per hour)
- $50 – $ 500,000
Analysis of the Appco Investment Plans.
We’ll begin our analysis with the 24 Hour Plan. If you divide 100% by the 4.375% hourly return, you find that the plan will break even in 23 hours. So, during the first 23 payments in the plan, you are recovering your investment and it is during the last payment that you come out ahead. The net profit from this plan is obviously 5% and, since you receive it in one day, you can say that it is your average daily net interest (DNI) for the investment plan.
Moving on to the Forever Plan, let’s first determine how long it will take you to break even. If you divide 100% by 3%, you find that it will take 33.3 days (33 days and 8 hours). Let’s round this off to 33 days. Remember that you are receiving 0.125% interest every hour (which comes to 3% per day). If you were only receiving interest once per day, we would round this UP to 34 days. However, this isn’t a very important detail…
If you are a follower of EmilyNews, you will know by now that, in order to determine DNI, you must know both the daily gross interest that an investment plan pays you as well as the length of the plan. Well, for the Forever Plan, you obviously don’t know the length of the plan. So, the best we can do is to assume a length. Actually, we are assuming a survival time for the program. Since it takes over one month for the investment plan to break even, we’ll work with assumed survival times that are all greater than this. Let’s take 60, 120, 180, 240, 300, and 360 days and see what happens.
Starting with 60 days, the total gross interest that you will earn will be the 3% daily return times the 60-day period, or 180%. Subtracting 100% from this because it includes your deposit, the total net interest that you will earn will be 80%. Finally, averaging this out over the 60-day period by dividing by 60, you get an average daily net interest (DNI) of 1.33%. If you do these same calculations for the other assumed investment periods, you will get the following results:
- Assumed length of plan DNI
- 60 days 1.33%
- 120 days 2.17%
- 180 days 2.44%
- 240 days 2.58%
- 300 days 2.67%
- 360 days 2.72%
Clearly, the longer the program survives, the more profitable this investment plan becomes. You have probably noticed that the DNI is homing in on the daily gross return of 3%. It can never become greater than that.
OK, that’s enough for now. I am sure that this information will give you something to think about. In Part 2 of this review we will discuss the results of our analysis of the Appco investment plans and point out their pros and cons. Hopefully, we will be able to come to some conclusions that will be helpful to the online investor. Please stand by. Part 2 will be published in a day or two.
