Hedge fund manager Ray Dalio suggests investors put 15% into store-of-value assets amid America\u2019s debt crisis.<\/p>\n

American billionaire and hedge fund manager Ray Dalio has recommended a 15% portfolio allocation into Bitcoin or gold to optimize for the \u201cbest return-to-risk ratio\u201d in light of America\u2019s crippling debt problem and currency devaluation.<\/p>\n

\u201c[If] you were optimizing your portfolio for the best return-to-risk ratio, you would have about 15% of your money in gold or Bitcoin,\u201d the founder of\u00a0hedge fund firm\u00a0Bridgewater Associates\u00a0said\u00a0during an appearance on the\u00a0Master Investor<\/em>\u00a0podcast on Sunday.<\/p>\n

Dalio said he has \u201csome Bitcoin, but not much,\u201d and is still \u201cstrongly preferring gold to Bitcoin,\u201d however.\u00a0<\/p>\n

But the exact split between Bitcoin and gold \u201cis up to you,\u201d Dalio said. His 15% suggestion marks a sharp increase from the\u00a01% to 2% Bitcoin allocation\u00a0he recommended in January 2022.<\/p>\n

Dalio\u2019s comments were made in the context of\u00a0America\u2019s national debt crisis,\u00a0which has ballooned to $36.7 trillion, US Treasury\u00a0data\u00a0shows.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe issue is the devaluation of money,\u201d Dalio said while pointing out that the US government will likely need to issue another $12 trillion worth of Treasurys over the next year to service its mounting debt.<\/p>\n

Latest US Treasury report reflects Dalio\u2019s point<\/h2>\n

A US Treasury report released on Monday\u00a0projected\u00a0another $1 trillion in new borrowing in the third quarter \u2014 $453 billion more than previously estimated \u2014 due to weaker cash flows and lower reserves.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Treasury also expects to borrow $590 billion in Q4, adding to the US government\u2019s growing reliance on debt to fund budget expenses and worsening concerns about its future fiscal path.<\/p>\n

Dalio noted that other Western countries \u2014 including the United Kingdom \u2014 face the same \u201cdebt doom loop\u201d issue and that their currencies will continue to underperform relative to hard currencies like\u00a0Bitcoin and gold\u00a0\u2014 which he described as an \u201ceffective diversifier.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dalio still skeptical about Bitcoin becoming a reserve currency<\/h2>\n

Despite advocating for Bitcoin as a portfolio diversifier, Dalio remains skeptical about its potential to serve as a\u00a0reserve currency.\u00a0He expressed doubt that any central bank would adopt the cryptocurrency in such a role, citing its lack of privacy and the transparent nature of its transactions.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cGovernments can see who is doing what transactions on it,\u201d he said, suggesting that any potential vulnerabilities in Bitcoin\u2019s code may undermine its effectiveness as an alternative money.<\/p>\n

Bitcoin and gold hit recent highs<\/h2>\n

Bitcoin and gold are performing strongly in the current economic climate, hitting respective highs in recent months.<\/p>\n

Bitcoin is currently trading at $118,100 \u2014 around 4% below its July 14 all-time high of $123,230, TradingView\u00a0data\u00a0shows \u2014 while gold has reached new highs multiple times over the past few months.<\/p>\n
