Bitcoin\u2019s price action is raising concerns about possible market manipulation as the cryptocurrency continues trading in a tight range despite billions of dollars in institutional inflows.<\/p>\n

Bitcoin has been range-bound for over two months, trading between the $92,400 support and $106,500 resistance since Dec. 18, Cointelegraph Markets Pro data shows.<\/p>\n

Bitcoin managed to briefly escape this range after US President Donald\u00a0Trump\u2019s inauguration on Jan. 20, when it briefly rose to a $109,000 all-time high before dropping back into its previous range.<\/p>\n

Bitcoin\u2019s range-bound price action may be manufactured based on the trajectory of the past months, according to Samson Mow,\u00a0CEO of Jan3\u00a0and founder of Pixelmatic.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt seems like it\u2019s some sort of price suppression,\u201d said Mow during a panel discussion at Consensus Hong Kong 2025, adding:<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you look at the price movement, we peak, and then we stay steady and chop sideways. And it\u2019s good, you can say it\u2019s consolidation, but it just looks very manufactured.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\u201cThe very tight range in which you\u2019re trading just doesn\u2019t look natural at all,\u201d Mow added.<\/p>\n

Despite Bitcoin\u2019s temporary lack of upside, industry watchers remain optimistic about Bitcoin\u2019s trajectory for 2025, with price predictions\u00a0ranging from $160,000\u00a0to\u00a0above $180,000.<\/p>\n

Bitcoin stagnates despite ETF inflows and institutional buying<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The US spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) and companies like Michael Saylor\u2019s Strategy are transparently buying a \u201cmultiple of the Bitcoin mined every day,\u201d Mow said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf Bitcoin\u2019s price isn\u2019t moving despite institutions and retail buyers accumulating BTC, then someone must be selling,\u201d Mow explained.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd you\u2019ve got retail buyers who are dollar-cost averaging and buying, and because the price is set at the margin, so that means somebody has to be selling.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

While last year saw \u201cstructural sellers\u201d offloading Bitcoin due to bankruptcies and restructuring, that period is largely behind the market, Mow said.<\/p>\n

The crypto market saw another key development this week as\u00a0FTX began repaying creditors, distributing over $1.2 billion to claimants.<\/p>\n

However, repayments are being made based on Bitcoin\u2019s price from November 2022, when it was trading near $20,000. Some analysts believe this could create additional selling pressure as recipients of these repayments seek to realize their gains.<\/p>\n

\u201cFTX is starting to pay out their dollars from selling Bitcoin, ill-advisedly, in the mid-20K range, so clearly, somebody is selling to match this. Otherwise, the price would already be moving upwards again,\u201d Mow said.<\/p>\n
